How to Choose a Therapist

 

 

Different Types of Therapists:

 

 

 

Psychiatrist – Medical doctor who specializes in mental health.

                           Licensed by the state.
                           Can prescribe medication.

 

 

Psychologist – Has a doctoral degree in psychology.
                             Licensed by the state.

 Trained to diagnose and treat all cognitive
 and behavioral disorders and issues.



Counselor/Social Worker --  Has a masters degree.
                                                     Licensed by the state.
                                                     Trained to diagnose and treat all cognitive
                                                      and behavioral disorders and issues.

 

 

Referral Sources to consider:

Health insurance companies lists
Referral services from communitiy agencies
Religious or spritiual leaders
Schools and universities
Those who have been to or go to see a therapist
Funeral homes
Professional associations lists (such as American Counseling Association)
Doctors and nurses

 

 

 

 

 

Questions to ask a psychotherapist:

 

 

What do you specialize in? 

What types of treatment methods to you use?

How often will you need to see me?

Will my insurance cover the sessions?

What is your training and professional background?

 

 

Remember, you are the client and have the right to interview the therapist.  Choose a therapist that you feel is right for you, and keep trying until you find one with whom you work well.  Therapy only yields positive results if you are comfortable with your therapist!
